Yesterday I ran across a compelling drumming video of a fellow named Levent Yildirim. He’s playing 3 different drums together, clapping, playing zills, and doing body music mouth pops. He is terrific, and it’s inspiring to watch. I highly recommend anyone who drums to view it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3kcD5KWT_Q .Clearly he’s a master of percussion and he proves that the body is the premier instrument. This particular Facebook post came from Pamela Lynn, whose drumming webpage www.pamelalynnmusic.com is also a great inspiration.
I posted it to my Facebook page in order to share it with my bellydancing teacher, who is also a good middle eastern hand drummer. She posted it to a young man in our community who is a talented turkish drummer. All this inspiration shared resulted in the three of us getting together last night and beginning a small drumming collaboration. My teacher is going to bellydance at a benefit in February, and me and the other guy are going to do 8 minutes of live drumming to accompany her.
I’m not an a middle eastern drummer, but I’ve studied more than a few types of hand percussion and know I am capable of learning and doing a plain, steady backbeat “Beledi” backbeat on a doumbek. My bellydancing teacher’s forte is her ability to project her unconditional love, and teach beginners. It’s been over two years since we began to be active friends and have regular contact. The potential for this collaboration existed from the beginning, but did not flower until now. Some things do come to those who wait.
